Next Hydrogen’s New CEO Jocelyne Moyer Aims to Push Electrolyzer Maker Toward Commercialization

Mississauga-based Next Hydrogen Solutions Inc. (NXH-X) has installed a new president and CEO, Jocelyne Moyer, who says her main task will be turning the company’s electrolyzer technology into a commercially viable business as it pursues opportunities in hydrogen fuelling and nuclear fusion.

Moyer was appointed to the roles in early September. She holds a background in mechanical engineering and has worked as a factory manager and consultant. She began her career in manufacturing and operations in the food sector before moving into business consulting and later taking senior positions in the renewable energy industry.

Next Hydrogen produces electrolyzers, which use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting hydrogen can serve as a low-carbon energy source, with potential uses replacing fossil fuels in industrial and transportation settings, as well as in nuclear energy applications.

In an interview with Sustainable Biz Canada, Moyer said she is “really excited” about Next Hydrogen’s trajectory, pointing to its research and development work, its status as a Canadian company, and her own interest in helping companies reach commercial scale.

Moyer’s career included a stint at PepsiCo Foods Canada, where she worked on plant floor management, process improvement and supply chain optimization. She later shifted into consulting, earning an MBA from Harvard and spending more than five years at Bain & Company. Following that, she joined Toronto-based Heliolytics, a company that conducted aerial inspections and analytics of photovoltaic systems. Heliolytics was acquired in 2023 by U.S.-based Zeitview, a developer of infrastructure software including for renewable energy assets. Moyer went on to serve as Zeitview’s senior vice-president of strategy and operations before moving to Next Hydrogen.

She said her experience at Heliolytics and Zeitview gave her insight into hardware and software development, scaling products for real-world use, and launching new offerings. That work also taught her how to grow a business in a way that is repeatable, meets customer needs and drives efficiencies, she said.

Moyer described commercialization as “definitely” her top priority at Next Hydrogen, saying her consulting background suits the task of scaling the company and building out a customer-focused commercial operation. One approach involves standardizing the company’s electrolyzer to align with customer requirements. While she expressed confidence that Next Hydrogen has a reliable and efficient product, she said a major focus will be identifying the right customer fit.

Next Hydrogen is working to demonstrate this approach through a project in British Columbia. In August, the company announced it had completed a basic design engineering package for a planned 10-megawatt hydrogen fuelling station in the province — a jurisdiction Moyer noted is a leader in Canada for early adoption of hydrogen fuel in medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. She called the project a way to offer a reliable, scalable and modular solution, adding it would be the company’s largest project if completed.

In 2025, Next Hydrogen began operating an electrolyzer for clean hydrogen fuelling at a distribution centre in Ontario, designed to produce up to 650 kilograms of hydrogen daily to support fuel cell forklifts.

The company is also active in the nuclear fusion sector. This year, it announced an agreement with Fusion Fuel Cycles Inc. to demonstrate electrolyzers built specifically for the fusion industry, along with two contracts awarded by Fusion Fuel Cycles to showcase its electrolyzer technology for a specialized nuclear fusion application. Moyer said the company’s electrolyzer design is well suited for fusion energy use, including its ability to reduce contamination risk. She described fusion as an important long-term market that is entering a critical phase.

Moyer said she remains optimistic about the hydrogen sector given ongoing concerns around energy independence and security, areas she believes hydrogen can help address. She noted that electrolyzers require only electricity and water to produce hydrogen — inputs that are relatively abundant in industrialized economies and do not require significant importing, unlike fossil fuels.

The International Energy Agency, in its 2026 review of the hydrogen industry, said electrolysis could help countries diversify hydrogen production away from coal and gas. However, the agency also noted that low-emissions hydrogen and related fuels remain limited in scale, with constrained production and distribution capacity. It further forecast that low-carbon hydrogen production is likely to remain more expensive than fossil fuel-based hydrogen in most parts of the world.

Moyer said Next Hydrogen has additional updates to share regarding its projects and progress toward commercialization, adding that she expects the period ahead to be a significant one for the company.
