What to know about Canada Disability Benefit payments

If you qualify, your first payment arrives the month after your application is approved. If your total entitlement for the July-to-June year is $240 or less, you get it as one lump sum instead of monthly payments.

CDB payments are not taxable, but you must file a tax return by April 30 every year and keep an approved Disability Tax Credit to stay eligible.

Who qualifies for the Canada Disability Benefit

  • You are between 18 and 64 (you can apply up to 6 months before your 18th birthday).
  • You have been approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC).
  • You are a Canadian resident for income tax purposes and a citizen, permanent resident, protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months.
  • You, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, have filed your 2025 tax return.

When you apply, you may receive back payments for up to 24 months, but not for any month before June 2025. Service Canada aims to send an eligibility decision within 28 days of applying.
