What to know about OAS payments
OAS amounts are indexed to inflation every quarter. The Government of Canada says OAS benefits will rise 1.4% for October to December 2026, a 3.0% increase over the past year.
OAS is taxable and is clawed back for higher incomes; the GIS, Allowance and Allowance for the Survivor are not taxable.
Who qualifies for Old Age Security
- You are 65 or older.
- You are a Canadian citizen or legal resident when your application is approved.
- You have lived in Canada for at least 10 years since age 18 (at least 20 years if you now live outside Canada).
A full OAS pension requires 40 years in Canada after age 18. With 10 to 39 years you receive a partial pension, so the maximum amounts above won't apply to you.

Delaying OAS to get more
You can start OAS at 65 or delay it up to age 70. Each month you wait adds 0.6% to your payments (7.2% a year), up to 36% more at 70. You can't get retroactive payments for the months you chose to defer.

The OAS clawback (recovery tax)
OAS is taxable, and higher-income seniors repay part or all of it through a monthly recovery tax. The clawback starts when net world income is above $93,454 (2025 income). For payments from July 2026 to June 2027, the pension is fully clawed back at $152,062 of income for ages 65 to 74 and $157,923 for 75 and over.
The Guaranteed Income Supplement, the Allowance and the Allowance for the Survivor are not taxable, and are recalculated every July based on the previous year's income.
