Edmonton Trucking Company, Driver Face Charges After Alleged Falsified Logs on Northern Ontario Route

Ontario Provincial Police have laid charges against a transport truck driver and the Edmonton-based company he works for following a traffic stop on Highway 17 east of Mattawa on Sunday.

According to a news release issued by the OPP on Wednesday, the driver’s paper logbook indicated that a haul from Kenora to North Bay had been completed in 12 hours. Police said the 1,566-kilometre route along Highway 17 takes nearly 17 hours according to Google Maps, a discrepancy that led to the charges.

Charges Against the Driver

The 44-year-old driver is facing a dozen charges, including speeding, operating a vehicle without a working speed-limiting system, exceeding the 13-hour daily driving limit, falsifying or defacing a record or document, and failing to furnish information to police.

Company Also Charged

Police said the Edmonton-based carrier, which was not named in the release, faces three charges of its own, including permitting the operation of a vehicle that lacked a functioning speed-limiting system or electronic logging device.

The OPP release did not provide further details on potential penalties or next steps in the case.

Terence Miller studied finance and economics, and spent a lot of that time more interested in why markets behave the way they do than in memorizing formulas for exams. He's drawn to stories about smaller companies and the decisions behind them: why a founder pivoted, why a deal fell apart, why a "sure thing" wasn't. He's still figuring out his voice as a writer, which he thinks is a more honest thing to admit than pretending otherwise. When he's not writing, he's probably reading earnings calls for fun, which he recognizes is a strange hobby to have.
