A well-known Vancouver eatery tucked inside a lumber yard in the city’s southeastern corner has extended its closure after a plumbing problem left the business without running water.
The Northern Cafe and Grill, often described by patrons as a hidden gem, first announced the shutdown over the weekend of Sept. 27-28, citing a plumbing failure tied to the age of its building, which management says is nearly 80 years old. At the time, the cafe’s operators said they were working to resolve the issue but could not say when the restaurant would reopen.
Repairs Could Take Weeks
On Sept. 30, the cafe’s management posted an update on Facebook saying the situation had not improved as quickly as they had hoped. According to the post, plumbing repairs may take several weeks to complete, and the restaurant remains temporarily closed with no confirmed reopening date.

Management said the aging infrastructure of the nearly 80-year-old building is part of what is complicating the repair work. The cafe has not provided a timeline beyond indicating that the fix will take time.
Staying in Touch With Customers
The business said it plans to continue posting updates on social media as repairs progress, thanking customers for checking in and expressing support for the restaurant during the closure. For now, anyone hoping to visit the cafe has been advised to wait, with no set date for when the doors will reopen.
