Nunavut’s business community gathered in Iqaluit to recognize companies and individuals driving economic growth in the territory, as the Nunavut Trade Show concluded on Sept. 17 with an awards gala at the Aqsarniit Hotel.
Kirt Ejesiak, founder of the all-Inuit drone company Sedna ROV and Arctic UAV, was named Businessperson of the Year. Accepting the award, Ejesiak spoke about the importance of training Inuit workers for emerging technology roles, noting that current operations are surveying only a portion of Arctic waters and expressing hope the work would continue for another decade or two.
Construction Arm Takes Top Business Honour
Business of the Year went to Arctic Fresh Projects, the construction division of a grocery delivery company. Founder Rhoda Recinos delivered her acceptance remarks in Inuktitut, while co-CEO Albert Netser spoke in English about the company’s approach to developing its workforce, describing an emphasis on patience and support to help field staff grow in their roles.
Wind Power Project Earns Special Recognition
A special achievement award was presented to Nunavut Nukkiksautiiit Corporation for its work developing the Sanikiluaq wind power project. Chief operating officer Heather Shilton credited the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s leadership for guiding the renewable energy company and said the project’s goals extend beyond cutting carbon emissions. She pointed to stabilizing electricity rates, improving affordability, and reducing reliance on imported diesel as key aims, while framing the initiative as part of building stronger communities for future generations.
Lifetime Achievement Recognitions
The gala also included two Lifetime Achievement Awards. Glenn Cousins was honoured for his contributions to the Kakivak Association, an economic development non-profit, with the award accepted on his behalf by his son, Max Cousins, following a standing ovation from attendees.
Rhoda Cunningham was posthumously recognized for founding the language company Innirvik Support Services. Her award was accepted by her widower, Duncan Cunningham, and daughter Alexandra Cunningham.
