Quebec Immigration Ministry Sends Erroneous Closure Notices to 746 Skilled Worker Applicants

Quebec’s Immigration Ministry mistakenly sent file closure notices to 746 applicants under the province’s Skilled Worker Selection Program on Saturday, according to a report by CBC. The ministry has said the notices were the result of a computer error and has asked affected applicants to disregard them.

The Skilled Worker Selection Program is designed for immigrants seeking to settle permanently in Quebec, a pathway that plays a role in the province’s labour force and economic planning. The erroneous notices caused confusion among applicants who believed their files had been closed.

Lawyer Calls For Accountability

Immigration lawyer Maxime Lapointe told CBC that several of his clients received the notifications on Saturday, which left them anxious about the status of their applications. Lapointe said, “Somebody needs to be accountable for this.”

Ministry Response

The ministry said it is working to contact all 746 affected applicants to clarify that the closure notices were sent in error. It did not provide additional detail on how the computer error occurred or on any further steps beyond reaching out to applicants.
