A union representing roughly 1,200 workers at Teck Resources Ltd.’s Highland Valley Copper mine in the British Columbia Interior has issued a 72-hour strike notice, setting up a possible work stoppage at one of the province’s major mining operations.
United Steelworkers Local 7619 said the notice follows failed negotiations with Teck over a new collective agreement for the site near Logan Lake, B.C. The union said it has raised concerns about the company’s ability to attract and retain skilled tradespeople, and had proposed measures to address staffing shortages, raise wages and strengthen pensions in order to keep the mine competitive within B.C.’s growing mining sector.
Teck’s Response
Teck said it has a contingency plan in place to maintain safety and environmental management should a strike go ahead, and said it remains committed to reaching what it called a “fair and reasonable” collective agreement that supports the long-term viability of the operation.

If no negotiated agreement is reached, strike action could begin as early as 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Timing Amid Merger Talks
The labour dispute comes as Teck works to close its multibillion-dollar merger with Anglo American PLC, a deal the two companies announced last year. The report on the strike notice was first published by The Canadian Press on Oct. 21, 2026.
