Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó have agreed to pursue a trade mission to the Dominican Republic in the first quarter of 2027, following a meeting in Canada aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two jurisdictions.
The planned delegation is expected to include Canadian government officials and business leaders seeking investment and commercial opportunities, as well as direct connections with Dominican companies, according to Dominican Today.
Investment and Trade Priorities
Bisonó pointed to Ontario’s standing as one of Canada’s principal economic centers and its trade relationship with the United States as reasons for Dominican interest in greater investment from the province, specifically in mining and energy. The two sides also discussed potential cooperation in the energy sector.
The foreign minister also raised the issue of expanding access for Dominican products in Ontario, naming cigars and rum as examples, and noted that existing air connectivity between the two places could support trade growth and export opportunities.

Financial Sector Ties
During the meeting, officials discussed the role of financial and banking services in deepening economic relations, including the existing presence of Canadian financial institutions operating in the Dominican Republic.
The discussion took place as part of Bisonó’s official visit to Canada, during which he was accompanied by a delegation of Dominican business leaders. The visit forms part of broader efforts by the Dominican government to strengthen bilateral economic relations and encourage closer integration between the productive sectors of both countries.
