Century Casinos is selling its two Alberta racetrack-and-casino properties to Highfield Investment Group in a deal valued at approximately $23.2 million, the company announced Monday, Sept. 28.
The transaction covers Century Mile Racetrack and Casino near Edmonton International Airport and Century Downs Racetrack and Casino just north of Calgary. Both properties combine casino gaming with horse racing. Century Casinos currently owns 100 per cent of Century Mile and a 75 per cent stake in Century Downs, with the remaining 25 per cent of Century Downs held by other partners.
The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other standard closing conditions.
No Immediate Changes for Operations
Despite the change in ownership, there are no announcements of either property closing. Both Century Mile and Century Downs are expected to continue operating under Highfield once the sale is finalized.
The land and buildings for both sites are owned by VICI Properties and leased to Century Casinos. As part of the agreement, Highfield will assume the existing leases and take over responsibility for rent payments going forward.
Part of a Broader U.S. Focus
For Century Casinos, the sale fits into a larger strategy of concentrating the company’s resources on its properties in the United States. Proceeds from the sale are intended to go toward paying down debt, and the company said the deal is expected to reduce its annual rent costs by approximately $10.7 million.
Century Casinos co-CEOs Erwin Haitzmann and Peter Hoetzinger described the sale as an important step in that shift, saying it will allow the company to concentrate its resources on its U.S. properties.
Company Retains Other Alberta Locations
The sale does not mark a full exit from the Alberta market. Century Casinos will continue to operate Century Casino & Hotel in Edmonton and Century Casino in St. Albert, neither of which is included in the transaction with Highfield.
