Caledon East Businesses Still Feeling Pinch After Airport Road Closure

Businesses along Airport Road in Caledon East say they are still struggling to recover from a summer-long closure that cut into sales by as much as 40 to 80 per cent, even weeks after the road reopened.

The affected stretch, running from Emma Street to Hilltop Drive, was closed to through traffic in mid-July. Peel Region reopened the road on Sept. 4, three days ahead of the original schedule, citing extended working hours on weekdays and weekends along with construction efficiencies identified during the project.

Relief Tempered by Ongoing Construction

While business owners on that section of Airport Road welcomed the early reopening, many say conditions remain far from normal. Narrow lanes, localized lane reductions and traffic light delays tied to continuing work are still in place, according to the report.

Lingering Impact on Sales

The closure’s effect on revenue — described as a drop of 40 to 80 per cent for some businesses — has left owners saying it will take more time before customer traffic and sales return to pre-closure levels.

What’s Next

No timeline was given for when the remaining construction work and associated traffic restrictions will be completed.
