MUJI Opens First Vancouver Island Store, Launches Community Spotlight Program in Victoria

Japanese retailer MUJI is opening its first Vancouver Island store this week at Victoria’s Mayfair Shopping Centre, marking the company’s fifth location in British Columbia and its third store opening in Canada within the past year.

The launch coincides with the debut of the MUJI Community Collective, a new initiative the company says is designed to spotlight local businesses and organizations rather than focus solely on promoting its own arrival. Ahead of the opening, MUJI invited Victoria residents to nominate local businesses they value, then connected with those businesses to take part in grand opening celebrations and introduce them to MUJI’s broader customer base.

A Different Approach to Store Openings

According to MUJI, the Community Collective reverses the typical retail opening model by asking the company to celebrate the community it is entering rather than the reverse. The partnerships formed through the initiative are intended to continue beyond the opening weekend, and MUJI says the program will be used as a template for future store openings across Canada.

Richard Rappaport, President of MUJI North America, said the company’s growth in Canada is aimed at pairing its Japanese design philosophy with closer ties to the communities where it opens stores. He said the Victoria opening represents an important step as MUJI expands its footprint in the country while working to build connections with local businesses, organizations and residents.

Store Details and Grand Opening

The Mayfair location spans 3,379 square feet and will carry MUJI Canada’s full product range, including kitchen and home goods, apparel basics, stationery and travel items, laid out in the company’s standard marketplace format. Mayfair Shopping Centre is described as Victoria’s leading fashion-focused retail destination, housing a mix of national and regional retailers.

The grand opening weekend is scheduled for October 24 and 25, featuring giveaways and activities along with treats and prizes contributed by the local businesses participating in the Community Collective.

The Victoria opening continues MUJI’s expansion in Canada, following a pattern the company describes as strategic growth paired with an increased emphasis on community-rooted retail experiences in each new market it enters.
