Giant Tiger on Pembina Highway Set to Close in February 2027

A Giant Tiger location on Pembina Highway in Winnipeg will permanently close its doors on Feb. 28, 2027, according to a company spokesperson.

The store at 2195 Pembina Hwy. is the second Giant Tiger closure announced in the city in recent months. The company previously confirmed that its downtown Winnipeg location would shut down on Nov. 7.

Company Cites Careful Review

In a statement, a Giant Tiger spokesperson said the decision to close any store “is not one we take lightly and is made following careful consideration and thorough analysis.” The company did not detail the specific business reasons behind the Pembina Highway closure in the statement provided.

Giant Tiger said its focus now is on supporting employees affected by the shutdown. “Our priority is to support our employees through this transition, and we are working directly with affected team members,” the spokesperson said.

What It Means for Shoppers

Despite the back-to-back closures, Giant Tiger said it remains committed to its presence in Winnipeg. The company encouraged customers who regularly shopped at the Pembina Highway or downtown locations to visit one of its other stores elsewhere in the city, or to shop through its online platform.

No further details have been released about the specific circumstances that led to the closure of the Pembina Highway store, including whether it relates to lease terms, store performance, or broader company strategy. The sources available do not indicate how long this particular location had been operating or provide additional history about the store.

With roughly four months remaining before the doors close for good, shoppers in the area are expected to see the location continue operating as normal in the interim, with Giant Tiger directing customers toward its remaining Winnipeg footprint as the Feb. 28, 2027 closure date approaches.

Terence Miller studied finance and economics, and spent a lot of that time more interested in why markets behave the way they do than in memorizing formulas for exams. He's drawn to stories about smaller companies and the decisions behind them: why a founder pivoted, why a deal fell apart, why a "sure thing" wasn't. He's still figuring out his voice as a writer, which he thinks is a more honest thing to admit than pretending otherwise. When he's not writing, he's probably reading earnings calls for fun, which he recognizes is a strange hobby to have.
