Quebec-based outdoor retailer La Cordée is closing permanently after more than seven decades in business, the company announced in a message posted to its website Wednesday.
The retailer said it will officially wind down operations in the coming weeks. The announcement follows a filing for protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act earlier this summer, a step that gave the company temporary shelter from creditors while it worked through its financial difficulties.
Store Closures Preceded Shutdown
In the lead-up to Wednesday’s announcement, La Cordée had already closed two of its locations: one in Laval and another in downtown Montreal. Three stores remained in operation at the time of the closure notice — the Saint-Laurent Boulevard location in Montreal, La Vie Sportive in Quebec City, and a store in Saint-Hubert on Montreal’s South Shore.
In its notice to customers, the company said its teams would continue serving shoppers with the same commitment until the final closures take effect.

A Retailer Rooted in Scouting History
La Cordée traces its roots back to 1953, when it was founded as a Scout cooperative. Over the decades, it built a reputation as a specialist in outdoor gear, serving customers interested in camping, cycling and cross-country skiing. The company’s closure brings an end to a business that had become a fixture of Quebec’s outdoor recreation retail scene for more than 70 years.
