LoCI Controls, Inc. has launched a Canadian division, LoCI Controls Canada, as the company looks to expand its automated landfill gas monitoring technology into the country’s growing renewable natural gas (RNG) market.
The company, which specializes in real-time landfill gas monitoring and control systems, said the move builds on its existing position as a technology provider helping landfill operators improve the financial performance of RNG projects. RNG is produced by capturing methane from landfills that would otherwise be flared or released, converting it into a marketable low-carbon fuel.
According to the company, the expansion comes amid growing momentum for RNG in Canada, including recent federal investment aimed at expanding RNG production capacity in Ontario. It also comes ahead of new federal methane requirements that will begin phasing in starting in 2028 for larger landfill sites that already have gas collection systems in place. LoCI said its real-time monitoring technology is positioned to help operators adapt to those upcoming rules.
Canadian Deployments Already Underway
LoCI said it is already operating at three Canadian landfill sites — two in Ontario and one in Quebec — where RNG projects are approaching commissioning and the start of commercial gas sales. The company said these deployments have shown that its system can perform through Canadian seasonal conditions, including extended periods of freezing temperatures.
At one of the participating sites, the company reported that methane flow and the amount of energy delivered to the gas plant increased by approximately 14% after its automated control system was deployed.
New Hire to Lead Local Support
To support its Canadian growth, LoCI Controls Canada has made its first local hire, Meaghan Amaral, who will serve as the company’s Service Representative and Territory Manager. In this role, Amaral will provide field support and training for existing operations while also helping to lead business development across Canada’s RNG sector.
LoCI said landfill gas systems today are largely managed manually, with technicians travelling to individual well sites to take measurements and adjust gas flow by hand. The company noted that underground conditions can shift between visits due to factors such as weather, barometric pressure, moisture and decomposing waste.
The company’s system is designed to offer a continuous, real-time alternative. It measures individual landfill gas wells at intervals as frequent as every 15 minutes, tracking gas composition, flow, temperature and pressure. The system also automatically adjusts wellhead valves to maintain site-specific target operating parameters as conditions change. Data from across a wellfield is centralized in LoCI’s cloud-based platform, WellWatcher, allowing operators to monitor performance and identify issues remotely.
