A Brampton plaza is set to see one fast food tenant replace another after a long-running Kentucky Fried Chicken location closed its doors and a new building permit application signals a Taco Bell is moving in.
Signs posted at the now-shuttered KFC location at 27 Ruth Ave. thanked the community for its patronage, though the reason for the closure has not been disclosed. Requests for comment from KFC have not been returned. The Ruth Avenue plaza location held its grand opening on June 8, 1991, according to a newspaper advertisement archived by Peel Archives, and featured a drive-through. It may have been among the oldest KFC restaurants in Brampton, a city where the KFC brand has had a presence for decades as part of a Canadian franchise history dating back to the 1960s, when Scott’s Chicken Villa launched as the original Canadian KFC franchise network in 1962.
New Tenant Filed for Renovations
A newly filed building permit application indicates that Taco Bell will take over the space as a tenant, with the filing describing the work as internal alterations for a restaurant. The application does not specify an opening date, and requests for comment from Taco Bell Canada on timing have not been returned.

Expanding Presence in the Region
The Ruth Avenue location would add to Taco Bell’s existing footprint in the area, where six locations already operate in Brampton alongside dozens more across the Greater Toronto Area. The move comes as Taco Bell restaurants across Canada have recently brought back limited-time menu items, including the Quesarito and the Meximelt, a dish featuring a flour tortilla with seasoned beef, pico de gallo and a three-cheese blend.
While details on the new restaurant’s opening timeline remain unclear, the building permit filing confirms that renovations tied to the transition are underway at the former KFC site.
