Shopify Buys Shop.com Domain From Market America

Shopify has acquired the shop.com web address from US e-commerce brokerage firm Market America, the companies confirmed this week. Market America announced the sale on Tuesday, saying it plans to move its online presence to MarketAmerica.com, a new site that will be built on Shopify’s platform.

Shopify did not disclose how much it paid for the domain. In an emailed statement, the company said acquiring the shop.com address gives shoppers an easier way to use Shop, its discovery and checkout tool, to find and buy from brands online.

A Domain With a Long History

Shop.com has changed hands more than once. The address was sold in 2003 for $3.5 million USD, equivalent to roughly $4.9 million CAD at the time, when it went from the Internet Real Estate group to Altura International. Market America then acquired it in 2011 for an amount that was not disclosed.

High-value domain names have fetched far larger sums in the past. Cars.com previously sold for $872 million USD, while business.com went for $345 million USD, illustrating how lucrative the market for sought-after web addresses can be.

Part of a Broader Branding Push

The shop.com purchase follows Shopify’s acquisition of the domain’s Canadian counterpart, shop.ca, in 2025 for $536,000 CAD. Shopify reports more than $3 billion USD in quarterly revenue, and the latest domain purchase appears to reflect the company using that financial position to strengthen its brand and customer reach.

The news arrived shortly before Shopify announced a new tool called Canvas, which is powered by the company’s agentic AI assistant Sidekick. Canvas is designed to give merchants greater control over how their online stores are designed.

What Comes Next

Market America’s transition to MarketAmerica.com is expected to proceed on Shopify’s platform, though neither company has released further details on the financial terms of the domain sale or a timeline for the full rebrand.

Terence Miller studied finance and economics, and spent a lot of that time more interested in why markets behave the way they do than in memorizing formulas for exams. He's drawn to stories about smaller companies and the decisions behind them: why a founder pivoted, why a deal fell apart, why a "sure thing" wasn't. He's still figuring out his voice as a writer, which he thinks is a more honest thing to admit than pretending otherwise. When he's not writing, he's probably reading earnings calls for fun, which he recognizes is a strange hobby to have.
