Trison Farms has broken ground on a new greenhouse development in Leamington, Ontario, marking an expansion of the region’s agricultural production footprint. The first phase of the project will cover 11.75 acres of growing area, with construction expected to wrap up by the end of May 2027 and planting slated to begin the following month.
When the service area and boiler room are factored in, the total footprint of the build will reach approximately 12.97 acres. The greenhouse is designated to grow tomatoes, though the construction timeline could result in cucumbers being planted first.
Builder Brings Prior Experience with Trison
Universal Fabricating is serving as the builder on the project and was represented at the groundbreaking ceremony by Sherman Froese, Abe Wiebe, Deepak Lakhwani and Isaac Schmitt. Trison Farms leadership at the event included Rick Mastronardi, Josh Mastronardi, Joel Mastronardi and Jordan Mastronardi.
The two companies have collaborated before. Universal Fabricating previously worked on Trison’s existing operation, I.P.R. Farms, where it carried out a lifting project in 2023.
Isaac Schmitt, Vice President of Greenhouse Operations at Universal Fabricating, said the groundbreaking represents the start of a significant undertaking for both companies. “This milestone marks the beginning of an exciting project, and we’re honoured to celebrate alongside the Trison Farms team as they bring their new location to life,” Schmitt said. “We look forward to seeing this new location take shape and being part of the journey ahead.”
Timeline for the New Facility
With construction targeted for completion by the end of May 2027, the new greenhouse would begin its first growing cycle roughly a month later, in June 2027. The project adds to the concentration of greenhouse vegetable production in the Leamington area, a hub for Ontario’s greenhouse agriculture sector.
Universal Fabricating is also scheduled to attend the Canadian Greenhouse Conference, where it will have a booth presence.
